1991 Vintage Report

Italian: 1991 Italian Wines: The 1991 vintage was better than first thought but did not rival the three exceptional vintages that preceded it. July was generally very hot and sunny, continuing into August. September continued warm, but rainfall from the middle of September on prevented Nebbiolo and Barbera from ripening fully. As a result the crop was small and the wines will not maintain the traditional longevity associated with the grape.

In Tuscany most producers in Chianti made only small quantities of Riserva, if any at all. In Montalcino and Montepulciano however producers who thinned out the crop during the summer were rewarded with raw materials for wines which have kept well. The best examples of Brunello and Vino Nobile have good depth and structure and although the fruit is not particularly exuberant they are drinking well now.

Bordeaux: 1991 wines: Generally an inconsistent vintage with First and Second Growths still drinking well. An abnormally cold frosty April killed many of the buds on the vines particularly those in the southern part of Bordeaux (Pomerol and St Emilion). Although new buds formed and developed, the harvest was always going to be late to allow the grapes to mature fully. Despite the set-back, some acceptable, light wines were produced from northern vineyards of Medoc and Graves.

Port: 1991 Port: Declared as a Vintage by some producers the first since 1985. A very small but good Vintage.

Amarone della Valpolicella, 1991

Brigaldara

94 Points - Cellar Tracker

"The color was a bright ruby, showing no age. The bouquet was muted but seemed fresh, with noted of fruit. On tasting, the wine is still fresh, with undertones of the dried grapes as expected. However, other flavors included mango and papaya. The tannins were balanced and the wine sang with the robiola cheese it accompanied. There was a moderate finish but everything was in harmony. It seemed to fail after about 30 minutes, not surprising given its age. In summary, a lovely wine which is drinking well now and seems to have several good years ahead of it." Cellar Tracker Review.

1991 Fonseca Vintage Port, 1991

Guimaraens Vintage Port

Dark, maturing, still very densely coloured on inspection though. The nose starts off in a very obvious fashion, full of sweet fig and cedar, showing plenty of spice and with a little time also a fair whack of spirit. But with time it does all channel down into something a little more defined, mainly a cedary wood-spice with chalky, vanilla tinged, edge, but also a painty-chemically nuance too. It suggests a dry structure, perhaps with a woody streak, but although there are elements of this on the palate much more evident - at first at least - is the rather fat and substantial entry, with a slightly plump and soupy feel.

Croft Vintage Port, 1991

Croft Vintage Port

Wine Spectator awarded this 94 points!

Croft vintages are only declared a few times a decade, when a remarkable year has been had. This is a rounded, supple port with a phenomenal mouthfeel. Will continue to keep for another five or so years.

Deep, opaque, just turning on the rim. Still quite a dense nose with underlying plummy fruit and floral maturity just starting to emerge. Full, rich and fleshy with some bitter chocolate intensity at the core and a firm tannic grip building towards the finish. Alc: 20.5%. Drink 2011-25.

Gould Campbell Vintage Port, 1991

Vintage Port

Reviews
"1991 ~ Gould Campbell ~ Vintage Port – Dark magenta color that is just short of opaque. A spicy profile of black pepper, licorice, cedar, mint, raspberry and Raisinettes. Rich, concentrated, but silky smooth textured crushed red berry fruit, framed by cedar and black pepper. This GC delivers a soft and complex, well-defined core, snappy acidity and firm chewy tannins that forebode a long upside from here. One of the longest finishes of any Vintage Port we tasted, this is a gorgeous young Gould and requires either a long decant for current consumption, or it will reward patience if cellared.

Quinta do Noval Vintage Port, 1991

Vintage Port

*** 90-92 Points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews:
"paque deep black colour. The nose is sweet and raisiny, quite fragrant and perfumed. The palate is spicy, peppery, quite "bullish" in a way. The Niepport shows more restraint and balance. Slightly dry on the finish - bit this is still an excellent port that should last another decade at least. Drink now-2020. Tasted June 2004." Neil Martin Wine Journal
